2010 Villa Park, CA Bink-A-Thon

From the section: What is a Bink-A-Thon?
October, 2010 |

Villa Park Bink-A-ThonMax Berndt and his neighbors in Villa ParkOctober 5, 2010 -- VILLA PARK, CA -- On Oct 3rd, Villa Park City Hall was buzzing with volunteers making ultra soft fleece blankets for children in need of comfort. The group turned out 35 blankets in less than 3 hours! Adding 20 previously made ones, 55 in total were given to the Kinship Center, to help Orange County foster children. “It’s always so heartwarming to see the community, and especially so many kids, joining together to support such a great cause!” said event coordinator and Binky Patrol Director, Carolyn Berndt.

Villa Park Bink-A-ThonA Bink-A-Thon is an event where a large group gathers for one day to make as many blankets as possible to be given to a local shelter or hospital. There are stations set up for sewing, tying the blankets off with yarn, painting squares (younger children love this part) and just organizing the fabric.

When donations of fleece are received, it opens up the event to the less-crafty bunch.  They can easily cut fringe, tie knots and create cozy blankets for those in need.

It can be a crazy day of pot-luck, sewn fingers, spilled coffee, a lot of laughs and a ton of binkies!  "It can be any way you make it!" says Binky Patrol founder, Susan Finch.  She adds, "Events can have a few people or hundreds.  We've had some surprise turnouts with over 175 people showing up to lend a hand or drop off blankets they made at home."
