Binkies bring a lot of comfort, but so do VISITS from loving people
Reading aloud goes nicely with binkies
Binkies bring a lot of comfort, but so do VISITS from loving people. Reading familiar stories, or happy stories aloud can bring smiles and a respite from the current situation.
As a mother, daughter and someone who has been sick, through some unpleasantness from time to time, I know the importance of a soothing voice, familiar songs that evoke happy memories, as well as stories from my past that take me away.
Recently, I put together the idea to read aloud at a memory care facility. I also have a call into a battered women’s shelter to bring pajama story time there once a week. I’m reading to a group of seniors this week who have memory issues. They are in their 70s and 80s. I’ll be telling them groaner jokes and bad puns for my debut. Good ice breakers. I’d love to bring them old Jack Benny radio shows, the music of their lives: Frank Sinatra, Dino, Rosemary Clooney and the like. Every audience has different needs.
They don’t know it yet, but I’ll get them helping me make blankets for Binky Patrol next. We need them! They are USEFUL, VALUABLE, CHERISHED! They can even make them for their families. Giving blankets is healing to the recipient. Making blankets is healing to the maker.
I love reading aloud and performing. My original idea was to add public speaking and workshops to my business in 2016. I think I’ll start here first.
