The selvage is the side of the fabric when you unroll it - it usually has writing, or holes from where it was on the winding machine. It makes the fringe thin, curly and it will tear easily.

All blankets MUST have the selvage - ugly edges - cut off BEFORE you cut the fringe.

Cut your fringe 4-5 inches deep, 1" wide so you can tie it like a balloon - not tying the two pieces together like shoelaces. This ensures you have a KNOT. Many people tie like shoelaces, but not the second time so you can pull the fabric apart. That's why we do it like a balloon.
